Yesterday, our Director of Policy & Partnerships, Steven Almazán, joined EdTrust-West's 2026 Ed Equity Forum in San Diego, where education leaders and advocates came together to discuss strategies for advancing educational equity across California. Steven led a session on using financial incentives to strengthen California's teacher workforce and exploring how strategic investments can help recruit and retain qualified educators. We're grateful to @edtrustwest for bringing champions together for these meaningful conversations and creating space to share ideas that can help bolster California's education system. 🤝🏽🍎

📚 As California moves forward with the implementation of AB 1454, a bill requiring the use of evidence-based ELA/ELD instructional materials in K-8 classrooms, state leaders must provide clear, comparable information to understand the strengths and limitations of the materials under consideration. The current designation does not tell educators which programs are strongest or how they compare. Tomorrow, EdVoice Institute and their coalition partners will provide testimony at the Instructional Quality Commission meeting, advocating for greater transparency and clearer information about instructional quality on behalf of all California students. For months, EdVoice Institute (our sister organization) and our partners have advocated for the State Board of Education (SBE) to uphold a stronger quality bar for state-funded literacy professional development programs. 📚 Yesterday, our efforts culminated in Efrain Mercado, our Chief Government Affairs Officer, speaking at the SBE meeting to advocate for California's students. 🎤 We’re proud that this collective advocacy helped secure important steps forward: ✅ Greater transparency in program evaluation criteria ✅ Adoption of Tier 1 programs ONLY ✅ Commitment from the SBE to provide greater guidance for local education agencies in selecting programs Thank you to our partners who stood with us throughout this effort!
