Last night we hosted Abundance: Building the UK Energy System at our new office - an evening of conversations with the people who shape policy, on the challenges that will define UK energy over the next decade. We were honest about the problems. Energy costs are too high. Demand is about to surge as AI and electrification take off. And growth is slow because Britain can't build fast enough: grid connections take years, planning decisions drift past their deadlines, and plug-in batteries that could cut household bills sit behind a safety study, with rules not expected before 2028. But the message of the evening was optimism. Every one of these barriers is fixable - and we're ready to work with government to get it done. A solar farm can be built in months. Connecting it to the grid can take years. The technology is not the bottleneck.

UK energy bills move with global gas prices. A supply disruption anywhere raises them here. The more energy the UK produces at home, the less exposed bills are to disruptions elsewhere.

AI training is an energy problem. The largest data centres consume as much power as small cities. AI progress is dependant on us achieving energy abundance.

Energy is the input for everything. Medicine, food, housing, transport. Make energy cheap and you make almost everything cheaper. That is what we’re working on.

We generate clean energy, trade it, and supply it directly to homes. Owning our own generation gives us more control over cost and source. Every link in the chain we own is a cost we can manage.

The UK stopped issuing new North Sea drilling licenses. The reason given was climate commitments. The gas it now imports from the US carries roughly 15% more lifecycle emissions than domestic North Sea gas. It also costs more to get here. You pay for liquefaction, shipping, and regasification before it reaches a power station. The policy intended to reduce emissions has delivered more of them, at higher cost.

Plugging a solar panel into a standard wall socket is illegal in the UK. The government opened a consultation on changing that. We have been thinking about this for a while. Watch this space.

Germany gets about as much sun as Alaska, and built one of the world's biggest solar fleets anyway. Solar does not need a desert anymore.

Abundance builds prosperity. There has never been an energy poor rich country. Using more was never the problem. It is the path.

The UK does not have enough electricians to meet its own energy targets. More retire each year than qualify. Now demand from solar, heat pumps, and EV chargers has outrun supply.
