Meet Nasir Anthony Montalvo, one of this fall's facilitators for our newest course 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡. Nasir is an experimental memory worker whose practice challenges the erasure of Black and queer people from the historical record, working across archival study, obsolete and emergent technology, popular education, and the written word. They founded {B/qKC}, a community archive of Black queer midwestern history. Its new website, bqkc.1800nasi.net, opened the digital archive to the public with an inaugural collection focused on Soakie's, Kansas City's historic Black gay bar. Built with decentralized web technology, {B/qKC} is hosted on a physical server (a Raspberry Pi 4) run by its own team and archived on IPFS for resilient storage—a model that keeps the archive outside corporate-controlled servers. Nasir was also selected for the Cultural Memory Lab, led by Gray Area and TechSoup and supported by Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web, where they received a grant to support the project. The platform that taught a generation of artists, designers, and educators how to code has shaped two decades of creative practice, and its community is still building.
