What an insane day in AI. The frontier models just became substantially cheaper, with the Opus 5.5 price cuts, and now with GPT-6 Sol and Luna dropping token prices by 50%. The rate at which the cost per task (on a like-for-like basis) drops in AI is unlike any other type of technology in history. And every time the cost of AI drops, the use-cases you can deploy agents against dramatically increase. This is Jevons paradox applied to agents. These improvements will directly lead to broader diffusion of AI in the economy as we can use agents to process all of our data, scan our code for security issues, read through all log data to make decisions, have agent swarms in workflows, and much more. The cost of tokens is directly correlated to these use-cases being opened up at scale.

Dario's essay points towards the right path forward. The details need working through, but the direction is correct for meeting this critical moment. This is also why we recently put out our proposal for an industry-wide standards body for frontier AI.

Proud of this statement from Dario on pacing - as anyone close to the technology knows, AI seems to be on a trajectory to progress far faster than the rate at which society can adapt to its capabilities and risks. AI is an amazingly positive technology - and an incredibly powerful one. For us to truly benefit from it we need to treat it seriously. We need to find ways to slow the frontier of development, such that we can better deal with collective action problems and buy ourselves more time for understanding the properties of these systems and how they need to be handled. On a personal note, as a parent of young children, it is an everyday crazymaking occurrence to reflect on how little the development of literal superintelligence is regulated relative to the food and toys I buy for my children.

We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.
