With Reveal Day around the corner, you'll hear “contention set” a lot.
One string. Multiple applicants. Hello contention.
Reveal Day will show the initial sets for identical strings & variants. Later evaluations, notifications & objections can also place strings judged similar in appearance, sound, or meaning into contention too.
Once finalized, eligible Community Applications can pursue Community Priority Evaluation. Any unresolved contention goes to an ICANN auction.
Reveal Day tells us where contention begins. Question is, how will it end?

THE DOT THICKENS #3: What is a replacement string?
When applying for a new TLD, applicants could select an alternative string alongside their first choice.
After Reveal Day, they have 14 days to decide whether to stick with the original or move to the replacement.
Why switch? Contention.
If the first choice is contested, an eligible replacement can offer another route forward.
The important bit: it had to be named in the application itself, before anyone knew what everyone else had applied for.
Less of a backup. More of a second bet.

4/It also helps explain why vertical integration can be attractive in the domain industry.
Bringing more of the registry, infra & registrar stack into closer alignment can reduce hand-offs in design, operation & distribution.
That does not mean every operator needs to own every layer. But the there is value in getting them to work towards the same outcome.
