Software Should Work, a first-year conference in Columbia, Missouri, pulled off something we don't see much anymore: two days of people who just love the work, talking to each other with no agenda beyond doing it better.

To explore how methodology can color results we used our open-source benchmarker to compare ParadeDB and Postgres FTS three times.
- P1 (1 term, closed loop): within 10%
- P2 (40-term rotation): 29x throughput
- P3 (open loop @ 50 QPS): 47x P99

Full-text search was solved in 2016, Lucene had owned the space for a decade. Rewriting it in Rust, as a side project, on a plane sounds like a terrible idea.
But Paul Masurel (@fulmicoton) is a special kind of person. His side project became Tantivy, now a widely used (and very competitive) search library that's even helping improve Lucene.
We sat down and talked about challenging solved domains, open-source competition done right, and why long-fermented frustration is an underrated driver.
