Turns out it might've really happened. An article fitting Fitzgerald's description exists. It appeared in the New York Daily News on April 30, 1923.

This is the last thing I purchased from WeirdStuff Warehouse before it closed. It's labeled "SRI Menlo Park Calif." Anyone know anything about it? I assume it's either an over-the-top prop — the wiring inside is bonkers! — or equipment actually used during the Stargate Project.

The device I own is one of the very first prototypes. Later versions used fancier materials and had changes made to address cooling issues.
