Public Universities keep adding new esoteric degree programs without removing old, outdated degrees. In South Carolina, legislators are taking action to address this issue, and as I argue in this piece, they can do more to ensure that new degree programs are heavily vetted.
In today's @AcademicRenewal article, @SCPolicyCouncil CEO @r_cathcart writes, "South Carolina's new budget proviso cleans up its public universities' bloated degree catalogs. Now it needs to stop the clutter from returning." jamesgmartin.center/2026/10/…

One of the more interesting results on property tax exemptions for seniors from @scpolicycouncil’s latest poll. The poll asked if property tax exemptions should favor seniors, young people, or treat all taxpayers the same. Young people (ages 18-34) favored an equal policy at 48%, with only 21% saying young people should receive an exemption and 6% favoring senior exemptions. Seniors (ages 65+) favored senior exemptions at 48%, with 30% favoring equal treatment and just 2% favoring exemptions for young people. All age groups except 65+ had a majority supporting an equal policy. There’s a lesson in there. CC: @GreenPlusAnE @esaagar
