The state is running an awards program for Utah companies using AI to make people's work and lives better. Nominations close Sunday night.
The Pro-Human AI Elevation Awards are judged on outcomes, not size or marketing, so a small startup has the same shot as a large company.
Finalists will be recognized at the Governor's AI event at the Grand America, and winners will be announced at the Utah AI Summit on Dec. 8.
If your company is doing this kind of work, apply. If you know one, send them the link or nominate them yourself.

Utah spends a lot of time thinking about one question: How do we make sure AI works for people, not the other way around?
It’s a question we regularly discuss with Utah’s Pro-Human AI Task Force, and it’s shaping how we approach new technology. We want to encourage innovation while learning in real time where thoughtful guardrails are needed. As @MeganBanta_1 reports, Utah's AI policy lab and regulatory sandbox are helping us do exactly that: giving companies room to test new technologies while giving policymakers better information before we write the rules.
This work takes more than a set of principles. I’m grateful to the Utahns putting those principles into practice, and I look forward to continuing the conversation at the Utah AI Summit on Dec. 8.

New tech is often a toy before it becomes a tool. Using it as a toy inspires types of tool it can become.
To stress test this, I will often hand new tech to my kids to see what they will do with it. I learn a lot. AI was no exception. Handed them Lovable and in an afternoon they had created their own version of their favorite game.
Then it went from entertainment to industry, and it’s been powerful to watch them build tools.
With exceptional partners @Lovable @imagilabs and @siliconslopes we’ve been imagining what it could be like to share that with others.
It should be better than Saturday morning cartoons. If you have a kid, I hope you’ll make time to join us.

I'm raising four kids on the Wasatch Front. The Great Salt Lake is turning to dust, and the dust is turning toward us.
Every spring, the dry bed of the Great Salt Lake rises into the air, carrying arsenic, and settles over the valley where they sleep. We divert most of the water that would refill the lake to grow alfalfa, and nearly a third of that crop is shipped overseas, much of it to China. The water goes with it.
This piece in Utahn is the clearest account I've read. It gives the skeptics their say, credits what the state is already doing, and still makes the stakes impossible to miss.

Mitt is right that AI is our highest and most urgent national priority.
I don't believe we're going to see mass unemployment. AI will take many jobs, but it's likely to create just as many as it takes (if not more). The current data and history itself suggest this is the most likely outcome.
We're more likely to face extinction from nuclear weapons than AI, which is why we should end all of these pointless wars that have us on the brink of World War III.
Those who say AI will lead to the extinction of humanity have an obligation to answer a simple question: How will that happen exactly? It's math, algorithms, data, and advanced fabrication. How will that kill us on its own?
That said, AI weapons, pathogens, and surveillance are critical issues that our leadership class has completely failed to address.
We are in a crisis, but the technology itself is not the crisis. It's a total lack of leadership in every sector of society.
This lack of leadership has put us on an accelerated path toward totalitarianism. That should be our biggest fear.
And it's why we should resist things like UBI, government control over AI companies, and the use of this technology to surveil our own citizens or to murder innocent people.
Our highest and most urgent national priority should be AI safeguards. The risks of AI weapons, pathogens, mass unemployment, surveillance, and even extinction must not continue to be largely ignored.

Anthropic is calling for a collective pause (or slowdown) in AI development.
They must know this isn't going to happen, which makes one wonder why they're calling for it anyway.
Is this their Pontius Pilate moment? Washing their hands of whatever comes next.

Is this a done deal? 40,000 acres is a lot.
Never heard of this until two days ago.
The challenge we have against the Chinese is they're building 10X the power we are. We've had permitting problems across the country. Utah stepped up and said, "Look, we can compete. Not only do we have the land, 40,000 acres, we've got a pipeline running through the land, and we have this designation that can accelerate permitting." We're building power from scratch from the pipeline and using Natural gas that we're gonna burn with turbines clean. But we can also give back to the grid. That's good for the community. But for the country, we need to compete with China. We need to lead in AI in perpetuity. Data centers are what we need and we need them now, and Utah's stepped up.
