The world has been in a state of heightened tension since the war in Ukraine though instability existed long before that. Today, as the U.S. gradually steps back from its traditional role as the global "police man" old conflicts and local skirmishes are flaring up more quickly. The absence of a clear power balancing force allows regional disputes to escalate faster, as rival states and non-state actors feel emboldened to act without fear of immediate intervention.
