Professional tennis player Ben Shelton and professional soccer player Trinity Rodman recently visited Columbia’s Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation at @nyphospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center with the nonprofit Hopes & Heroes, spending time with young patients, families and the teams caring for them. @hopeheroes supports pediatric cancer and blood disorder research and care at Columbia and other medical centers across the tristate area. Both athletes have a personal connection to this mission. “We know a young girl with leukemia who loves to watch Trinity’s games,” said Shelton. “Knowing that this bright, happy child has to get chemotherapy the next day really stays with us and motivates us to help.” @ColumbiaPS professor of pediatrics Dr. Monica Bhatia says “we’re grateful for Hope & Heroes continued support and for opportunities like this that remind our patients and families how many people are standing behind them.” Read more: columbiamed.link/4AyaFrd

Congratulations to Dr. Michel Sadelain, director of the Columbia Institute for Cell Engineering and Therapy (CICET), for being awarded the prestigious Tang Prize in Biopharmaceutical Science for the discovery and development of chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies, which have revolutionized treatment for blood cancers. CAR-T cell therapies modify a patient’s own T cells to seek and destroy cancer cells. Since 2017, such therapies have treated over 30,000 patients with blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphomas, and myelomas, leading to remission for many. columbiamed.link/4gBmyoB

Adults who carry a high-risk genetic variant for Alzheimer’s disease may develop the disease or be protected from it. @columbiaps researchers found that protection may come from a rare mutation in FN1, a gene that encodes the protein fibronectin. The discovery raised the possibility of developing a drug to block this process. The researchers’ latest study provides biological evidence that this approach may be possible. columbiamed.link/4isvaiz
