I was honoured to open the High-Level Dialogue on Opportunity Crops and Resilient Food Systems, hosted by the @CropTrust focusing on the critical role of Africa’s agricultural biodiversity in building resilient, inclusive and sustainable food systems. Africa is home to a wealth of nutritious, climate-resilient and locally adapted crops—from sorghum, millet, teff and fonio to cowpea, bambara groundnut, cassava, yam and indigenous vegetables. Unlocking their potential requires stronger seed systems, greater investment in research and development, improved market access, value addition and, importantly, scaling proven innovations across the continent. Through the African Union’s agricultural transformation agenda, including CAADP and the Kampala CAADP Declaration, we remain committed to advancing diversified, climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agrifood systems. The AfCFTA also offers a powerful opportunity to expand regional markets for opportunity crops and create new opportunities for farmers, agribusinesses and rural communities. The message is clear: Africa’s agricultural future must harness the diversity already embedded in our soils, cultures and food systems. Together, we can transform opportunity crops into engines of food security, nutrition, climate resilience and inclusive economic growth.
