Telegram's Gram Wallet: Everything You Need to Know Before It Goes Live

The code for Telegram's built-in Gram Wallet is now public, and TON validators are voting right now on whether to put it live on-chain.

Everything on a blockchain runs on smart contracts. This is the one that will power the wallet sitting inside Telegram for a billion people. Most will scroll past it. If you get it now, you're ahead.

One wallet, one shared brain

Normally every wallet carries its own code. Telegram's is different.

Each Gram Wallet on its own is basically an empty shell. It points to one much bigger "brain" that all the wallets share. That brain holds the actual wallet logic, and it tells every wallet how to work.

So when the wallet gets improved, they don't update a billion wallets one by one. They update the one shared brain, and every wallet gets it at the same time.

Now I know what you're thinking. One brain controlling every wallet sounds risky. What if a bad actor pushed out an update to drain everyone? Or what if Telegram just changed the wallet however they wanted?

That can't happen, Telegram can't touch that brain on their own. The only way it ever gets updated is if TON validators vote the change through. So even though the wallet lives inside Telegram, Telegram is not the one that decides what it does. The network is. It is still decentralized. One shared brain, but nobody can quietly change it alone.

That is the whole reason there is a vote happening right now.

A wallet in everyone's pocket, day one

This is the part people are sleeping on.

Because each wallet is just a tiny shell, Telegram can create one for a user instantly and cheaply. No setup, no seed phrase step, no downloading a separate wallet app.

So once the code is live, Telegram can switch this on inside the app and hand a wallet to their users the moment they open Telegram. That is the kind of distribution nothing in crypto has ever had: a wallet already sitting in an app that people use every single day.

What the wallet can actually do

The wallet has three functions.

1. Send one message.
2. Send up to 255 messages at once.
3. Change its key.

On TON, a "message" is not a text message. A message is how you do everything on-chain. One message can be:

  • Sending $GRAM to someone.
  • Sending USDT or any token.
  • Buying, selling or moving an NFT or a Telegram Gift.
  • Swapping on a DEX like STONfi or DeDust
  • Using any app or mini app (staking, paying, voting, minting).

So "send one message" really means "do anything on-chain." And sending up to 255 at once means you could pay 50 people, or swap, send and list an NFT, all in a single tap. Three functions is genuinely all a wallet needs.

Why did they build it like this?

They kept the wallet as simple as possible, then added one thing most wallets don't have: you can change your key.

Gasless fees. The wallet has a built-in way for someone else to cover your network fee. So an app, or Telegram itself, could pay the fee for you, and you can send tokens without holding any GRAM for gas. That is the difference between crypto that feels technical and crypto that just works for normal people.

Subscriptions and 2FA can be added later. The team behind the contract has openly said these are meant to be built in natively. The simple, upgradeable base is the setup. Down the line, once validators approve it, recurring payments could be added to every wallet at once: paid channels, memberships, in-app services, all in crypto.

Telegram makes it, but you can take it. Because you can change the key, you can move the wallet fully into your own control later. Same wallet, same address, no funds moved. Telegram sets it up, you can walk away with it whenever you want.

So what is this really?

It is not just a wallet. It is a payments system built into the app a billion people already use, that can grow over time as validators approve each upgrade.

Faster network. Near-zero fees. A wallet native to Telegram. And the day they switch it on, a crypto wallet in the pocket of everyone on it.

FYI, Durov himself previously said that they are planning to release a native wallet, decentralised exchanges and more.

You're early. Don't forget that.

Telegram's next step is to build a set of decentralized tools, including non-custodial wallets and decentralized exchanges for millions of people to securely trade and store cryptocurrencies. This way we can fix the wrongs caused by the current excessive centralization.
