In mid-2025, the Fairgate team ran the numbers on the Lightning Network as an agentic payment rail: transaction costs, locked collateral, routing complexity, payment success rates, mass-exit safety. The conclusion was hard to accept. Lightning, for all its contributions to Bitcoin, couldn't economically compete with centralized rails like Base or Tempo for machine-to-machine commerce at scale. So the choice became binary: let centralized companies own the agentic economy, or build Bitcoin a new Layer 2 from first principles. That's where Bit2 started. “Without a time-delay lock, a single validation bug and a total loss become the exact same event, because funds move the moment software says ‘yes.’” @RootstockLabs Co-founder and Scientific Advisor @SDLerner spoke to @cryptodotnews about why time-delay locks matter for Bitcoin bridge security, and how @rootstock_io's PowHSMs use a 4,000-block (~36 hour) delay before signing a peg-out. Time can be a security control. crypto.news/bitcoin-time-del…

A very clear explanation of Rootstock's time delay lock...
Why does Rootstock wait ~36 hours before signing a peg-out? Because bridge security is not just about moving bitcoin:native. Rootstock’s PowPeg was designed around that reality, with multiple independent safeguards. That’s one of questions we answer in our new PowPeg security FAQ 👇 rootstock.io/blog/rootstock-…

Some headlines (in Spanish) have described the depletion of (confirmed) UTXOs in Rootstock as a “bank run.” That’s false. Don’t fall for it. Rootstock continues operating normally. This is a temporary UTXO-management issue caused by the way the PowPeg processes peg-outs. Small peg-ins will create additional UTXOs, enabling more peg-outs to be processed in parallel and restoring normal processing times. New UTXOs are already being created. I estimate that everything will be back to normal within approximately 10 hours. If anything, its proof the peg is operating as expected and I anticipate the unmatched security of Rootstock will drive more users to it.

Over the past few days, many users have attempted to withdraw their funds from Rootstock simultaneously, temporarily exhausting the bridge’s inventory of UTXOs. I believe this was driven by concerns following the recent Liquid Network incident. As a result, every peg-out, regardless of size, now returns nearly all remaining peg funds as change. This delays subsequent peg-outs because that change must wait for 100 Bitcoin confirmations before it can be spent again. We currently estimate that peg-outs will take between 36 and 46 hours. We will look for parties willing to make multiple small peg-ins, creating additional UTXOs and helping restore normal processing times. Importantly, a single peg-out transaction can batch many user requests, so the delay does not accumulate with each additional peg-out. It remains capped at 46 hours.
Looks like the Rootstock PowPeg UTXO inventory has only one large UTXO at this point, so pegouts will queue up. Expect around 10 extra hours on top of the usual wait. This is a situation that affects UX, but it’s normal peg behavior. A protocol improvement to prevent this kind of situation is already in development and we expect it to ship in the next network upgrade.

Rootstock Powpeg dashboard monitors peg-outs while they are in the 36-hour time delay lock period.
We have a large set of monitoring and alerting components that we use internally. Our goal is to make this dashboard public soon, displaying information not only about the bridge and its operators, but also about the hashrate, the mining pools involved, and the rewards distributed across the network. Like the rest of our technology stack, it will be open source.

“Time-delayed Lock. Under the assumption that most existent Bitcoin ASICs are online, proof of work is actually proof of time elapsed. Not only PowHSMs validate consensus, the cumulative work required by the PowHSM also works as a forced time delay for any attack, same as most secure banking vaults.”   medium.com/rootstock-tech-bl…

The most important security mechanism provided by PoW is a TIME DELAY LOCK that does not require a secure enclave with a realtime clock. A security system without a time delay lock can be tricked into unlocking funds instantaneously without prior notice. Rootstock has a time delay lock based on proof of work, enforced by HSMs, not Bitcoin consensus. Drivechains are also based on this time delay lock, but enforced by consensus.

I hope the white hat hackers return Liquid funds soon and Liquid goes back to normal. But some lessons are learned the hard way. They need to add a time delay lock.

Native Bitcoin vaults (revocation keys) would have stopped this kind of attacks. OP_CCV / BIP-443 would do it.
