sometimes reality gives you something you never thought to ask for. a friendship that changes your perspective, a place that makes you feel comfortable, an opportunity that arrives at the wrong time but turns out to matter. not everything valuable begins as part of a carefully designed plan. and sometimes the opposite happens. you get what you wanted and discover that it doesn鈥檛 feel the way you imagined it would. that can be difficult to admit because there鈥檚 a strange pressure to be grateful for every dream that comes true.

there are moments when i catch myself thinking about the person i thought i would become by now. i imagined having different priorities, different experiences, maybe even a completely different life. it鈥檚 strange realizing that the future you once pictured so clearly was only a possibility, not a promise. i used to think changing my plans meant i had failed at following through. now i think some plans simply belong to an older version of you. the fact that you no longer want the same things doesn鈥檛 make the time you spent wanting them meaningless.

sometimes the hardest part isn鈥檛 what happened. it鈥檚 comparing what happened with what you thought would happen. you can have something good in front of you and still feel disappointed because it doesn鈥檛 resemble the future you spent years imagining.

i think one of the strangest parts of growing up is realizing that sometimes you can lose yourself without even noticing. you keep doing what you鈥檙e supposed to do, talking to the people you鈥檙e supposed to talk to, chasing the things you once wanted, and somehow you still end up wondering when you stopped feeling like yourself. there are periods in life when you don鈥檛 necessarily feel sad. you just feel disconnected. nothing is terribly wrong, but nothing feels particularly right either. you wake up, get through the day, go to sleep, and repeat it until you start wondering whether you鈥檙e actually living or just keeping yourself busy.

there are also things i thought i would have by this age that i still don鈥檛 have. sometimes that makes me sad. sometimes i wonder if i wasted too much time. but i鈥檓 learning that regret doesn鈥檛 always mean you made the wrong choices. sometimes it just means you鈥檝e grown enough to see things differently. i鈥檓 slowly becoming okay with the fact that some parts of my life will take longer. maybe my career will take longer. maybe certain dreams will take longer. maybe becoming the person i want to be will take longer than i expected.

some chapters are only meant to teach you something before they end, some people are only meant to be part of a certain season of your life. and some dreams need to disappear so you can eventually make room for something you didn鈥檛 know you wanted. so maybe life isn鈥檛 really about figuring everything out as quickly as possible, maybe it鈥檚 about learning how to sit with uncertainty without letting it convince you that everything is going wrong.

i also think we spend too much time mourning the versions of ourselves that no longer exist. the person we used to be, the dreams we once had, the people we thought would stay forever. but outgrowing something doesn鈥檛 automatically mean it was a mistake.

when i was younger, i thought every problem had to have an answer. if something went wrong, there had to be a reason. if someone left, there had to be an explanation. now i鈥檓 slowly learning that sometimes, things just happen. not everything comes with a satisfying conclusion.
