Could a Hyperliquid airdrop generate more revenue than it gives away?
I asked
@hyunsujung_ of
@HyperionDeFi about Season 3, and his answer got pretty interesting...
"All I know is that there's around 30% of the tokens set aside for the community. How much is distributed, through what means, and on what timeline? It's all speculation. And I'm sure you've seen as much as I have. The community is really, really good at speculation.
In conversations I've had with Jeff Yan, not directly about the airdrop, but about the longer-term vision for Hyperliquid—he does value further decentralization of the network.
From our perspective, when you look at how Robinhood or any other ecosystem, both incumbent offchain and those moving onchain, can incentivize participation, I don't really see any of them having the same kind of high-value, impactful catalyst that a potential airdrop season could be.
Now, that doesn't mean I think it's going to happen or not. But it could potentially be one of the first times ever where you announce an airdrop, maybe only give away 1% of the remaining supply, and potentially out-earn what you give away.
There's a really unique dynamic between the value you can generate over a given period of time versus how much you end up giving away. And the value of what you're giving away could potentially increase because of the fees generated.
We haven't sat down and done the actual math. But if you think about what's been done before and what could happen in the future, there's a very powerful tool that the Labs and Foundation have.
What they choose to do with it, I'm excited to see just as much as everyone else."
