it sounds stupid, but as a kid I dreamed of having an early-2010s-XKCD-core career working in some boring stuffy enterprise web shop writing Java and PHP, arguing about tabs vs. spaces and closing Jira tickets. it's all more exciting now, but I felt more at home in that time

finished reading Blood, Sweat and Pixels by Jason Schreier, which details how the gaming industry SUCKS and it's a miracle that games ever get made. it's (morbidly?) wonderful to me. i dream of dedicating myself wholly to something like that surrounded by others who feel the same

i'm of course viewing this from the perspective of a naive undergrad who has yet to genuinely go through it, and who—generally speaking—has no other real obligations etc, though it does seem that many in the industry view it similarly, which again feels almost morbidly reassuring
