But miners split from nodes, advanced to ASICs and closed the door. Today it is inherently permissioned.

Mujina is fully open-source mining firmware, with support coming for all manufacturer machines.
Right now the firmware application is barebones, but that doesn't mean you can't take it, side-load it, and make your own UI & distribution image.
We know barrier to entry is high right now, requiring SSH to install the firmware, but the snowball effect is underway!

Day 2 of the Kigali Bitcoin Developer Bootcamp was all about going deeper and getting hands on. 🇷🇼⚡
The morning kicked off with an open source Bitcoin mining experience, and it was a great one, especially as this was the first time we have introduced this session at one of our bootcamps.
Using Mujina and BitAxe devices, @dzeg5 gave participants a deeper look at how Bitcoin mining works, and they even mined against Hydra Pool. We watched the transactions appear on mempool.space on our private Signet and saw the whole process come to life.
A huge shoutout to the @256FOUNDATION for making this mining experience possible, and to @ryankuester for developing Mujina and helping make open source mining more accessible. 🙌
The afternoon was all about coding.
Participants wrote Python scripts to query their Bitcoin nodes, retrieve and decode transactions, and explore how developers can interact directly with the Bitcoin network. We also looked at SegWit and multisig.
Another packed day of learning, experimenting, and building.

RED TEAM COMES TO BITCOIN MINING: 256 FOUNDATION AUDITS MINING FIRMWARE, FINDS THIRD-PARTY RISKS
@256FOUNDATION has launched the 256 Red Team, a security program auditing ASIC mining firmware through reverse engineering, live traffic capture and share-level reconciliation.
The team says it has filed 41 findings across stock Bitmain firmware and third-party alternatives including LuxOS, VNISH and Braiins OS.
Among the issues found: unauthenticated factory APIs, paths to root access, default credentials, embedded vendor SSH keys and updates that fail to verify what they install.
But the biggest surprise came from Bitmain.
After decompiling its miner daemons and examining live connections, researchers say they found no evidence of hashrate skimming, remote kill switches or covert beacons in stock Bitmain firmware.
Instead, the team says concerning hidden behavior was concentrated in third-party “optimized” firmware.
Three responsible disclosures have already been submitted to VNISH, Luxor and Braiins, with researchers giving each 30 days to respond before publication.
MicroBT, Canaan, Auradine, Bitdeer and ePIC are next on the bench.
