Are you saying the boys who don't apply do not bother doing so because they know they won't make the cut? Applying is free by the way. DBE said there were 56% girls last year. You can assume the same or 50-50(to be conservative), but expect that the higher education enrollment share are close to skewed to the girls-this informed by NSFAS numbers. Maybe 60-40% Boys and girls are living in the same society so the factors on the challenge have to be specific to the boys. In the past sociologists correctly identified teenage pregnancy and marriage, menstruation, domestic responsibilities etc as the factors leading to girls dropping out or underperforming. This reasons are more circumstantial and not based on attitude of the girl towards school. I have to say good luck finding reasons that are not linked to attitude towards school.
