As a fighting game enjoyer and Mac user, I can relate to this
Fightcade runs emulators through Wine, and the UX on macOS is abhorrent. I can't even map my controller
With cross-platform libraries such as SDL and ImGui bringing your game to Windows only feels lazy
You can't just build regular apps (not games) for Windows and rely on Wine/Proton. Here's why:
1) Wine has abhorrent startup times. Borderline acceptable for games, but absolutely not for anything else.
2) Mixed hidpi support issues. This might get fixed in the future when Wayland backend becomes the default one.
3) Regular apps tend to use much wider variety of win32 api than games, that wine doesn't cover very well. One example I personally encountered is LowLevelKeyboardProc*.
4) Weird filesystem issues that you really don't want your user to deal with.
Bottom line is that actually requiring your user to run a regular productivity app from Wine is a borderline crime. It's fine when you don't support Linux and say "we've heard some users had success running it under Wine", but Wine is far from being good for this.
*This particular one is nasty - it's impossible on Wayland, so to support it Wine would have to rely on the user being in the input group, or require running the app as root.
