The midterms aren’t just another election. They’re going to determine what Trump’s final two years look like.
If Republicans lose the House, his legislative agenda gets a hell of a lot harder. Democrats get the gavels, the committees, the subpoenas and the investigations and there will be plenty.
Lose the Senate too, and judges and nominees become another battle.
Trump has two years left. There is no next term. There is no we’ll get it done later.
And that’s why Republican turnout is going to matter. Staying home because you’re pissed about one issue, one candidate or something Trump did could help determine who controls Congress for the rest of his presidency.
That’s what’s actually on the ballot in November.

You can call it nostalgia if you like. In the late 1960s a lot of us heated the house with one coal or log fire. The living room had the heat. The rest of the house did not. Bedrooms were cold enough that you could see your breath. There was no double glazing. On a hard winter morning the inside of the glass had a skin of frost. You scraped it off with a fingernail or a coin before you could see the street. That was not an emergency. That was Tuesday.
The fire had to be laid, lit, and fed. If the coal ran low, the house ran cold. You wore more clothes indoors. You slept with extra blankets and sometimes a hot-water bottle that was lukewarm by 3 a.m. Windows streamed with condensation. Mould was a fact of damp walls, not a landlord tribunal. Nobody thought the state owed them a constant 21 degrees.
After 2000 the baseline changed. Central heating, loft insulation, cavity fill, double glazing, and later better boilers became normal. New houses were built to warmer standards. Old ones were upgraded. Kids grew up in rooms that stayed warm overnight. Frost on the inside of the glass became a story grandparents told, not a morning chore. Thermostats, cheap jumpers, and sealed windows did what a single grate never could.
That gap is real. Greater comfort is progress. It is also a different training ground. A childhood without indoor ice, without the daily work of keeping one fire alive, produces different expectations. When mild discomfort is treated as harm, the old standard looks brutal and the new one looks fragile. “Snowflake” is a crude word. The comparison of conditions is not. We were not heroes. We were just cold, and we just got on with it.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was blindsided and publicly furious after two centrist Democrats crossed the aisle on a rare procedural vote and rescued Republicans’ floor agenda.
On Sept. 1, 2026, Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington voted with most Republicans for a House “rule,” the measure that sets which bills can come to the floor. Five Republicans had broken ranks, leaving the rule on the brink of failure. The two Democrats supplied the margin in a 210-208 vote. Without them, the House would have stalled.
The rule opened the door to a GOP resolution denouncing socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America, plus other Republican messaging bills. It also advanced Golden’s Northeast Lobstermen Protection Act, which he said was the point of his vote. Jeffries told reporters he got no warning. “I didn’t get a heads up. You’ll have to talk to Katherine,” he said, pointing to Whip Katherine Clark. He later called the move “a significant breach of trust.”
That night Jeffries, Clark, and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar issued a joint statement: the pair had “blindsided the entire House Democratic Caucus” and the action “necessitates a serious response.” Leadership sent the matter to the Committee on Caucus Rules. Jeffries would not rule out stripping committee seats. Golden is retiring at the end of the term. Gluesenkamp Perez holds a vulnerable district Donald Trump carried in 2024, which made punishment politically risky weeks before the midterms.
Eight Democrats later voted for the anti-socialism resolution itself; Jeffries and most of the caucus voted no. The episode exposed a split between leadership’s demand for unity on procedural votes and two members from Trump-leaning districts who put local bills and campaign positioning first. It also raised questions, still unanswered in public, about how tightly Jeffries could hold the caucus if Democrats won the House in November.
