A few years ago ESPN's @bburkeESPN did simulations on the current overtime rules and determined that the coin toss (and therefore going 1st or 2nd) had no effect on winning or losing.
At this point, overtime kick/receive decisions are game theory and vibes...
As the NFL has continually tweaked its overtime rules, one of the priorities has been making the coin toss less important. That appears to be working: Teams that win the overtime coin toss are 0-3 this year. nbcsports.com/nfl/profootbal…

In 2010, the NFL moved the umpire behind the QB for safety. One of the issues was it took a set of eyes off of defensive holding in the interior.
This job now falls to the back judge who is 25 yards deep in the secondary.

Important to remember that #analytics don't always mean go for it!
Per @sumersports, in the last 5 years, there have been 0 offensive plays run on 4th and 8 at opponents 15. Only 7 offensive plays run between 4th and 7-9 and between the 13-17.
Offenses are 1/7 converting in those situations. Colts were clearly in no-man's land.
Steichen's decision to call a play, look at the defense and make a decision is what every "old-school" player and coach wants to see happen.

He’s definitely not trying to trick the Colts. Bynum clearly tries to defer, which would give choice to Chiefs.
Craig Wrolstad doesn’t allow him to defer because they’re isn’t another potential half in the regular season, so technically nothing to defer to.
Good on Mahomes to try to take advantage of the coin flip faux pas.
