I’m seeing a lot of discussion about last night’s look that Texas brought out versus UTSA. I thought I’d give some historical perspective. While I appreciate some people’s passion on here… it doesn’t always reflect historical fact or in some cases I see far fetched mock ups that will never happen. Overall uniform, cleats and accessories is something I’ve tracked with the program for the 30 years of my life along with the eras that precede me. So let’s try to clear up some stuff in the following thread regarding cleats, socks, accessories as those are the main culprits of the current uniform debate 🧵 - 1/15

Throughout the late 60s Texas featured a two-color tube sock with a black cleat. Home or Away this was the program’s aesthetic. It was also in line with trends of the time period. A black leather cleat with a two-color tube sock was standard fare. On into the 70s that was the latter Royal years and the Akers era that followed, Texas kept up with changing trends. Switching from an old black leather cleat to a white cleat or turf shoe depending on playing surface. Socks during the early 70s switched as well, going from the two-color tube to a white tube sock with orange calf stripes. Again very on par with current trends at the time. What Texas was doing was not too far off from what you saw at other schools/programs. Home or Away this look continued into the mid/late 80s. 🧵 - 2/15

Some time in the 1987 or 1988 season we saw a shift in look… and one that reflects to some extent the version we saw last night. The striped sock look started to fall out of fashion as early versions of compression pants took center stage like what we saw on Eric Metcalf throughout 87 and 88. This wasn’t uncommon for the late 80s across other schools/programs especially with their skill players. It should be highlighted that not every player was wearing compression pants (same as last night) but a generic white sock with a new white Nike cleat was the standard. Home or Away… same rule applied. 🧵 - 3/15

The early 90s featured another jersey shift. In either 1990 or 1991, the team earned black cleats which was quickly coming back in vogue. Think Fab 5 Michigan basketball era. The football field wasn’t too different. However, the main difference during this era was that the black cleat hit the road too. “Icy Whites” of their time but with a black/white cleat complimenting the overall look. Definitely a different era with equipment rooms not carrying near the load they do now. White spat/tape was also very common place. This era also saw Texas go from Nike cleats to Reebok everything including the jersey/pant during the John Mackovic years and into the early Mack Brown seasons (1998 and 1999). 🧵 - 4/15

The cleanest look too; icy white unis with the long white socks and the black Nike field general cleats. Hated when we went to Reebok in 1994. Love the black shoes though. That Penn State look.

Hell we’re talking to one in Mike ! Along with Lovell Pinkney. Guys that got overshadowed by Ricky and then what was to come in the early 2000s. The 90s had some ballers.
