The last chapter of my PhD is finally published!🎉 Fluctuating stressor intensity compounded negative effects of low light and herbicides on seagrass biomass AND altered the mechanisms underpinning seagrass responses to stress.🌱🌊 Read the article here: doi.org/10.1016/j.marpolbul.…

Therefore, we recommend incorporating environmentally relevant variations in stressor intensity in multiple stressor experimental designs. ✅️ We also recommend evaluating mechanistic stressor impacts to more accurately predict effects on ecosystems. ✅️

Are animals occupying and healthy in restored coastal ecosystems? We extracted over 5000 data points and found indeed they are, and at remarkably similar abundances and diversity than in natural systems. One Earth: authors.elsevier.com/a/1iyPz…

Fluctuating stressors had greater adverse impacts on seagrass compared to static stressors. How effects were #mediated throughout the community also differed when stressors fluctuated compared to when they remained static over time. (3/4)

Our results suggest that mechanisms underpinning biological responses to stressors differ under fluctuating conditions. Multiple stressor experiments should thus consider realistic stressor dynamics in designs for enhanced understanding of impacts to real-world ecosystems. (4/4)

What makes seagrasses so special? Seagrasses are the only flowering plants we find living in the ocean. Just like plants on land, they have flowers and seeds. This species is Enhalus acaroides and it has flowers that open at low tide and pollen that floats on the surface.

Stressors rarely remain static in #coastal #ecosystems, yet this is how we often conduct #multiple #stressor experiments. So, what happens when stressors fluctuate? We explored this question in our latest study. doi.org/10.1111/ele.14120 (1/4)

We found responses varied by how stressors are introduced. Asynchronous #fluctuating stressors reduced seagrass biomass 36% more than for #static stressors. (3/4)
