This is Rainbow Canyon in California. Nicknamed Star Wars Canyon, it was commonly used for fighter jet training from WWII to 2019 by the USAF and US Navy. With easy access by photographers, it made for some opportunities for amazing footage to be captured. "Below-the-rim" activity was suspended in 2019 and there is currently a minimum 1,000' above the lip limit.

An A-10 Thunderbolt II from the Michigan Air National Guard was the first modern U.S. military aircraft to intentionally land on a U.S. public highway designed only for automobiles, touching down on Michigan State Highway M-32 on August 5, 2021. To test Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concepts, proving that combat jets can land on austere, non-standard surfaces to refuel and rearm away from vulnerable main bases.
