Our tracker dogs are trained to find what’s hidden – snares, trails, things people would walk straight past. But every so often, what they find is an orphan. It was our SWT/KWS Canine Unit, on a training exercise at Galana Ranch, who came across little Daba wandering alone – the start of his journey into our care. And it was the Canine Unit on a training patrol who found baby Pips, the orphaned giraffe. Both are alive today because our teams were there when they were needed. While most tortoises do not swim, Aldabra tortoises are the exception, and they can be quite buoyant, due to their large domed shell that can trap enough air to allow them to float. You will also see our pair, including male Earl, wallowing to mud or in shallow water to keep cool. The pool also has a solar waterfall that works in San Francisco’s sunshine!
