Gavin Newsom springs into action and orders the State Threat Assessment Center to actively monitor possible threats in case foreign adversaries heed Trump's call to nuke Los Angeles and San Diego. "Donald Trump’s remarks were dangerous — if not treasonous — putting a target on two of our biggest cities and one of America’s largest naval hubs," Newsom wrote on X. "I am directing the State Threat Assessment Center to actively monitor the situation in the event that foreign actors interpret the President’s remarks as an invitation to target California," he added. California's STAC is the state's central intelligence-sharing and threat-analysis organization that synthesizes information from state, local, federal, tribal, and private sources to identify and respond to threats. It is jointly operated by the California Highway Patrol, Cal OES, and the California Department of Justice. Newsom would not invoke it lightly, but the President has made it necessary. Last night at a rally in Nebraska, Trump openly fantasized about Iran destroying the two cities in question to uproarious applause from a MAGA crowd. And while the usual Republican proxies in the media are rushing to insist that his words have been misinterpreted, the transcript speaks for itself. "Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego," the President of the United States said. Newsom slammed the remarks as "disgusting and disqualifying," and unlike Trump, he backs his words up with actions. While Iran does not possess nuclear weapons nor does it have the ballistic missile technology necessary to reach the West Coast, Trump's speech is still extremely reckless. By calling for the nuclear elimination of these two cities, he's stating that their populations deserve to be wiped out. Radical Islamist groups likely have no interest in obeying his command, but what about far-right terrorists? Trump has essentially given his deranged, violent supporters the green light to do whatever they want to people in LA and San Diego. Newsom is right to remain vigilant.
