Thumbs Up for Peer Mentor Leadership!
Today, SMCC welcomed @CBonfiglioND from the University of Notre Dame’s @ACEatND Program for Inclusive Education for a day of peer mentor leadership training.
Twenty-six SMCC students participated in the training in our Media Center, gaining valuable insight and practical strategies to help them serve as peer mentors in our St. André Bessette Open Doors Inclusion Program.
Peer mentors play an important role in creating a welcoming and inclusive school community by supporting students with cognitive and developmental disabilities. Through their mentorship, they help foster friendships, academic support, social growth, and a culture of belonging throughout the SMCC community.
Since the program began in 2018, nearly 150 SMCC students have been trained as peer mentors. Their commitment helps make it possible for Bessette Scholars to experience a faith-filled, inclusive Catholic high school education alongside their peers.
We are grateful to Dr. Bonfiglio for returning to SMCC and sharing her expertise and experience with our students as they continue to serve and grow as peer mentors.

Fr. John P. Foley, SJ, founder of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, has been honored for his life’s work to strengthen Catholic schools by @NotreDame and @ACEatND.
Fr. Foley, who went on to serve as president of the Cristo Rey Network that includes more than 40 college preparatory schools for under-resourced families, received the Notre Dame Award for Outstanding Contributions to Catholic Education on May 27.
