🏃‍♂️🏊‍♀️🚴‍♂️ Can athletes with insulin-dependent diabetes compete at the highest level? Absolutely. Elite sport demands precision and for athletes living with insulin-dependent diabetes, managing glucose is an essential part of performance planning. From Olympic swimming and cross-country skiing to professional football, motorsport and basketball, athletes with diabetes have demonstrated that insulin therapy does not have to be a barrier to elite performance. In our latest Aspetar Sports Medicine Journal article, “Athletes with Insulin-Dependent Diabetes: Glucose Control, Performance and Elite Sport,” we explore how exercise intensity, insulin exposure, nutrition, stress, travel and recovery can influence glucose levels—and how athletes and medical teams can manage these challenges. 🔹 Exercise physiology: Why moderate aerobic exercise can increase hypoglycemia risk, while high-intensity efforts may cause transient hyperglycemia. 🔹 Endurance sport: How prolonged exercise and increased insulin sensitivity can lead to delayed or sustained glucose declines. 🔹 Team sports: Managing the rapidly changing demands of football and other intermittent high-intensity sports. 🔹 Technology: How continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and automated insulin delivery are transforming glucose management in elite sport. 🔹 Nutrition: Why carbohydrate planning and insulin adjustment need to be integrated into training and competition. 🔹 Travel & recovery: Managing time-zone changes, disrupted routines and the risk of delayed hypoglycemia. 🔹 Safety & return to play: Recognising hypoglycemia, preparing for emergencies and assessing metabolic stability before returning to competition. The goal is not perfect glucose control. It is stable, predictable glucose management that supports both safety and performance. 📖 Read the full article by Dr. Bahar Hassanmirzaei, Sports Medicine Specialist at Aspetar, in the latest issue of the Aspetar Sports Medicine Journal. ✍️ Written by Bahar Hassanmirzaei 🔗 Read the full article: journal.aspetar.com/en/journ…

Nutrition practices for working with youth athletes 📝 This new review highlighted key evidence and provided guidance on nutrition for youth athletes 📚 With specific focus on areas including, appearance pressure, body image and performance 🔍 Here are the 8 key practices for applied nutrition in youth sport ⬇️ Use performance-focused language 🍽️ ⚡ Avoid labeling foods as “good” or “bad” 🗣️ Focus on “fuel for performance, recovery and growth” rather than calories or restriction 🍛 Avoid unnecessary comments on portion sizes or food quantity Establish practical fueling routines ⏱️ 🍌 Ensure access to carbohydrate-rich snacks before training 🥤 Use carbohydrate-rich drinks/snacks during sessions >60 min 🥪 Prioritise simple recovery foods within 30–60 min post-training 📚 Educate athletes on how nutrition supports session quality, adaptation and recovery 🛌 Reinforce the importance of fueling during rest, illness and injury periods Coordinate messaging across the support team 🤝 🧑‍⚕️ Include accredited sports dietitians or SENR Nutritionists where possible 📢 Align nutrition messaging across coaches, parents and support staff 🧠 Focus on practical skills that help athletes apply nutritional knowledge Normalise growth and development 🌱 📈 Reinforce that puberty-related changes in body composition and weight are normal ⏳ Highlight that development timing differs between athletes 💪 Emphasise building physical capacity over changing body size Avoid appearance-focused communication 🚫 ⚠️ Avoid weight- or appearance-focused comments within team environments 🗨️ Challenge body composition-driven conversations among athletes, staff and parents Foster psychological safety 🧠 💬 Encourage open conversations around nutrition, body image and mental health without judgment 🔍 Approach athlete behaviours with curiosity rather than assumptions 🩺 Address signs of low energy availability with supportive, solution-focused strategies 🤝 Reinforce that athletes will be supported through both short- and long-term challenges Strengthen media literacy 📱 🎭 Reduce internalisation of unrealistic body and performance ideals 📲 Increase awareness of algorithms and encourage critical evaluation of social media content Follow best-practice body composition standards 📏 🚫 Avoid body composition testing in athletes <18 years unless medically necessary or sport-mandated 🎯 Prioritise optimising behaviours and performance rather than altering body composition Reference: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4208… Subscribe to Performance Nutrition Digest FREE to receive your daily study breakdown, straight to your inbox or via the Substack app 📥 performancenutritiondigest.c… Performance Nutrition Digest is powered by Healthspan Elite⚡️ healthspanelite.co.uk/

This paper answers why confident idiots run the world. Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy. It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.” they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception. And the results are wild. participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile. they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence. the paper revealed a brutal paradox: the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain. if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing. this creates a dangerous systemic loop. the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions. meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse. top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else. they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add. we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence. the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't. the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.
