WATCH: New American College of Rheumatology Recommendations Put Personalized Osteoarthritis Care First In the new 2026 Osteoarthritis Guideline Summary, the ACR provides updated recommendations for osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, and hand, emphasizing that treatment should be tailored to each person’s symptoms, health needs, lifestyle, and goals. Updated recommendations continue to strongly support core strategies such as regular exercise, self-management education, weight loss when appropriate, anti-inflammatory medications, and corticosteroid injections for selected patients. These approaches can help reduce pain, improve movement, and support daily function. Sharon Kolasinski, MD, professor at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and guideline principal investigator, answers questions about the new guideline summary for physicians and patients alike. The American College of Rheumatology and the Rheumatology Research Foundation today commended news reports that the Trump Administration will be stepping back from plans that would have introduced political oversight into grant-making decisions at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other federal research agencies. Scientific merit, rigorous peer review, and expert evaluation must remain at the heart of research funding. Protecting this process supports groundbreaking discoveries, strengthens America’s leadership in science, and improves care for people living with arthritis and rheumatic diseases. Not every ache is part of growing up. If a child has persistent pain, stiffness, swelling, fatigue, or trouble keeping up with daily activities, it may be time to ask your child’s doctor more questions because early diagnosis matters. Read about how a teenager’s persistent symptoms led to a diagnosis of juvenile arthritis after she sustained an ankle injury that turned out to be far more. This powerful story of triumph shares how a family struggled to find the right pediatric rheumatologist and persevered until an effective treatment was prescribed. Read the blog acr.tw/4h3JhZ7, or listen to the podcast acr.tw/4gVAEjc, for this patient testimonial about the benefits of rheumatic care and how a diagnosis is not the end of childhood. During Rheumatic Disease Awareness Month (RDAM) we highlight that with the right care, children with rheumatic disease can continue to grow, play, and thrive. #GrowingUpWithStrength #KidsCanHaveRheumaticDiseaseToo #RheumatologyAwareness
