Wildflowers are blooming in Barton where a cool burn was completed earlier this year! 🔥🌼 Cool burning is a type of cultural burning that uses low intensity fire to remove thatch and clean out invasive species. This technique stimulates the soil and promotes new native growth 💚 Back in June, Ngunnawal custodian Uncle Wally generously shared his cultural fire knowledge on the grass fields at St Marks Theological College Native Grassland. ACT Rural Fire Service volunteers supported this activity by assisting with the burn plan while also provided suppression resources to help ensure the burn was conducted safely.

What's the difference between AusAlert and the older Emergency Alert warning system? Emergency Alert sends SMS messages to mobile phones and recorded voice messages to landlines. If you receive an Emergency Alert, it will come from the mobile number 0444 444 444. AusAlert uses newer cell-broadcast technology to send warning notifications directly to compatible mobile devices connected to 4G and 5G networks. It can also reach large numbers of devices almost instantly, even when mobile networks are busy. Unlike a text message, an AusAlert appears as a notification on your device. For the most serious emergencies, a Critical Alert can sound a loud warning tone and vibration, even if your phone is on silent. 🚨 For more information about AusAlert and Emergency Alert: esa.act.gov.au/be-emergency-…

From this Sunday, 1 November 2026, the AusAlert emergency warning system will be operational in the ACT. AusAlert uses cell-broadcast technology to send alerts to compatible mobile devices during emergencies and disasters. You don’t need to register or download an app to receive an AusAlert. If you're in or near an affected area you may receive an alert, which will tell you what the emergency is, how serious it is, and what action you need to take. An AusAlert may vibrate and play a siren-like sound to get your attention. Find out more about alerts and warnings in the ACT: esa.act.gov.au/be-emergency-…

A realistic aircraft emergency scenario was run last week at Canberra Airport, as emergency services and support agencies came together for Operation Phoenix. The large-scale exercise simulated an aircraft crash shortly after take-off, giving responders the opportunity to test their training, procedures and decision-making in a safe and controlled environment. Many personnel from the ACT Ambulance Service, ACT Fire & Rescue, the ACT Rural Fire Service, the ACT State Emergency Service and ESA enabling services participated in the scenario, which involved fire suppression, rescue, casualty triage, decontamination and coordinated multi-agency response and incident management activities. Operation Phoenix was designed to strengthen how agencies work together during a major emergency, helping ensure responders can rely on their training, communicate effectively and make informed decisions under pressure if a real incident occurs. A big thank you to the volunteers, Canberra Airport staff and partner organisations who helped make the exercise possible. 📸 Canberra Airport Group

Volunteers from the ACT State Emergency Service have been busy today, helping people around the Canberra community who have been affected by the storms. So far more than 40 requests for assistance have been received, as a result of the heavy rainfall and damaging winds. Our volunteers have completed 35 of the jobs. The calls for help have come from every part of Canberra, with most incidents involving trees or branches being blown down, and also some power outages, some of which are still ongoing. While this severe weather is still active, please remember to: ⚠️ Take it easy on the roads and drive to the conditions; ⛈️ Keep away from stormwater drains and catchments; 🚗 Move your car under cover and away from trees; 🔒 Secure or put away loose items; 🚧 Never drive, walk or ride through floodwater. If you need support during a storm or flood, call the ACT State Emergency Service on 132 500. For weather updates, follow the @BOM_ACT of Meteorology. Over the weekend 25 participants took part in ACT Fire & Rescue’s Ainslie to Everest challenge - and every one of them reached the finish line! This year’s event at Mount Ainslie has already raised an incredible $33,893 for Lifeline Canberra. Over the past five years, the challenge has raised around $220,000 to support the non-for-profit's vital work. Each participant walked around 34 kilometres and climbed 2,000 metres in elevation. Together, their teams climbed the equivalent height of Mount Everest, reaching a combined elevation of 8,848 metres. Teams from the ACT State Emergency Service and the AFP joined ACTF&R participants for the challenge, helping raise awareness of mental health in emergency services and underlining the growing year-on-year support for the event. The day also brought the Canberra community together, with food, emergency services displays, live entertainment and plenty of family-friendly activities held at the top of the mountain. Thank you to everyone who walked, volunteered, donated and came along to support the challenge.

Cleaning your gutters, it’s the smart move! 👍 By ensuring your drains and gutters are clear of debris, you’re helping protect your home from: 🔥 Bushfire risk - dry leaves, twigs, and debris in gutters can easily catch fire from burning embers that travel ahead of a bushfire front. ⛈️ Storm risk - blocked gutters can cause rainwater to back up, get in under the eaves and into your roof space. 🍂 Don’t leave it until it’s too late, clean your gutters today! When fast-moving, dangerous bushfires reach homes and suburbs on the edge of Canberra, these highly-trained volunteers will be ready to step up. While the ACT Rural Fire Service is best known for fighting bushfires, its Interface Firefighters are trained to deal with rare but high-risk incidents along the urban interface, including building fires, vehicle fires and hazardous materials incidents. ACTRFS Interface Firefighters work alongside colleagues from ACT Fire & Rescue to protect urban areas of the ACT from the threat of fire. This qualification is not for new members. Program participants are experienced volunteers who have already completed significant training with the service, and typically have several years of operational experience. After a pre-course online learning component, participants spend two and a half weekends attending evening theory sessions and more than 35 hours of practical training. They are challenged with realistic and changing fire scenarios that required them to assess risks, adjust tactics and make decisions under pressure. Six volunteers successfully completed the final assessments last weekend, demonstrating their commitment to serving the Canberra community and continually building their skills. Congratulations also to everyone behind the scenes, from the instructors and assessors to the course coordinator, facilitators and course designers - countless volunteer hours have been invested into making this critical training a success.

Bushfire Season has officially started in the ACT and there are certain rules you should be aware of. 🔥 Fire Permits are now required if you are: • Burning off 🌾 • Cooking on unleased rural land 🍳 • Using fireworks 🎆 🚫 Total Fire Bans (TOBANs) The rules are even stricter on days when the ESA declares a TOBAN, when it is an offence to: • Light or maintain a fire in the open air 🔥 • Carry out high-risk work like welding or grinding ⚡️ 👉 Are you familiar with the Australian Fire Danger Rating System? 🟩 Moderate – plan and prepare 🟨 High – be ready to act 🟧 Extreme– take action now to protect life and property 🟥 Catastrophic– for your survival, leave bushfire risk areas Remember, these ratings predict the potential level of danger SHOULD a bushfire start. They don’t predict IF a bushfire will start. Volunteers from the ACT Rural Fire Service train all year round and are ready to protect the Canberra community, but we all need to do our part to prepare. Do you live in a bushfire prone area? Over the weekend residents, volunteers and emergency services came together for Interrupted - an exercise designed to test how households respond during a real emergency. Throughout the exercise, participants worked through a realistic bushfire scenario, receiving simulated warning information and testing the decisions they might need to make during a real emergency. The exercise helped build confidence, improve understanding of emergency warnings and identify opportunities to strengthen household emergency plans before the bushfire season. Importantly, the exercise also provided valuable insights that will help shape future community preparedness initiatives across the ACT. Thank you to everyone who participated, our volunteers, community partners and the many people who helped make the day a success. By working together to test plans and prepare before an emergency happens, we're building a safer and more resilient community. 🔥🚒 Ready to test your emergency plan? esa.act.gov.au/sites/default…

Everyone is back safe and sound! All ACT personnel deployed to support wildfire operations in the United States and Canada have now returned home safely, marking the end to a successful international deployment. Over the course of the season, 22 members from the ACT Rural Fire Service, nine staff from ACT Parks and Conservation Service, and one member of the ACT State Emergency Service answered the call for assistance. Our personnel served in Washington State, Oregon and British Columbia, which were being impacted by significant wildfire activity, including the Big Bear Fire. ACT members filled a range of important roles, from Incident Management Team positions such as Safety Officer, Resource Officer and Facilities Officer, through to field leadership roles and crew operations. On the fireground, crews carried out critical blacking out and mop-up work, strengthening and securing control lines to help ensure fires remained contained and communities stayed protected. Wherever they served, ACT personnel were warmly welcomed by local firefighters and communities, with their professionalism, expertise and teamwork earning high praise from those they worked alongside. A huge thank you to all those who deployed, as well as their families, friends and employers, whose support made these deployments possible.

If there's a risk to life or property, a warning will also be issued via our website, social media and other news outlets. You may see a range of TEST warnings and alerts over the coming weeks as the ACT Emergency Services Agency carries out its regular system testing program. These tests help ensure the systems that support emergency information sharing remain reliable, up to date and ready when they're needed most. A successful test isn't just about everything working perfectly. Finding an issue during testing is a positive outcome because it allows us to fix and improve systems before a real emergency occurs. Emergency information can be shared through a range of channels, including the ESA website, social media, news media and other warning tools. That's why it's important to stay connected to more than one source of information. If you see a test message, there's no need for concern. All public-facing tests will be clearly marked as TEST. 📷 File photo
