12.5.4.2 is pretty awful here in the DC suburbs.
Issues:
- Lane choice is horrible. FSD frequently changes out of the correct lane prior to a turn and is then unable to get back in the turn lane safely. In some cases, FSD will continue through the intersection and re-route. Sometimes FSD will slow to a creep in the thru lane and try hard to get into the turn lane (very unsafe in heavy traffic and infuriating to other drivers). In one case, at a complicated lane divergence, FSD very nearly ran into the lane divide while trying to decide which side of the divide it should be on (emergency safety disengagement).
- Occasionally misses highway exits
- Likes to camp in far left lane of highway, even when the general flow of traffic is faster than the car is traveling
- Frequently mistakes flashing yellow traffic lights in adjacent turn lanes as applying to the thru lane it is in
- On ~50% of flashing yellow lights encountered, FSD stabs the brakes as if it is suddenly encountering a flashing red light (unnerving, sometimes unsafe, confusing/infuriating for other drivers)
- Sometimes slows at intersections even when there is no reason to do so
- Sometimes treats Yield signs as stop signs, even when there is no traffic reason to do so
- Still cannot handle "No right turn in red" situations
- Still cannot handle variable speed limits in school zones
- Steering wheel shimmy in parking lots, indicating that FSD is confused about how to deal with parking lot conditions
- 100% of the time, FSD moves into a right-turn lane near my house, but believes it is a thru lane. The RT lane terminates in a road shoulder, and the FSD has, in the past, driven onto the shoulder, leaving the road surface. Since this behavior has never improved, I now pre-disengage when we approach this section of road
- Same lousy highway merge behavior as has been present since the early v11 days
I have no idea how FSD is really performing in California, where the bulk of training data appears to be gathered, but, in the DC area, v12.5.4.2 is not even close to getting 50 miles between critical disengagements, much less disengagements in general. Nor do I expect significant improvement until there is a hardware retrofit for HW3.
Overall, in this area, v12.5.4.2 on HW3 is a fairly stressful experience and is not even close to being certifiable for unsupervised self-driving. As a beta-tester, I do engage FSD whenever I am alone, but I no longer engage when I have passengers (even for demonstration purposes), and I regret paying $12,000 for a product that is unlikely to fulfill its promise for a long time, if ever.
I absolutely believe Tesla's approach to automated driving is correct and the only way to achieve scalable automated driving. But it's not going to happen on HW3
