#WATCH | Varanasi, UP: On genetic study at BHU on human skeletons, Cytogenetics Scientist, Department of Zoology, BHU, Prof. Gyaneshwar Chaubey says, "... An excavation at Rajghat in Varanasi back in 1957 uncovered a human skeleton. Rajghat is one of the key archaeological sites showing that Varanasi has been continuously inhabited for around 3,000 years. Since its discovery, the skeleton has remained stored in the Archaeology Department. A few days ago, Professor Ahirwar, Head of the department, contacted us to determine whether ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis could now be carried out. Yesterday, following all established ancient DNA protocols, we collected samples with Dr Prajwal Pratap Singh, an aDNA specialist from Hyderabad. The samples will undergo radiocarbon dating to determine their age, followed by DNA analysis. The genetic work will begin with mitochondrial DNA sequencing and then proceed to autosomal DNA analysis..."

#WATCH | Varanasi, UP: Head, Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Prof. MP Ahirwar says, "... Our Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology conducted excavations at Rajghat between 1957 and 1969 in several phases under Professor AK Narain and Dr TN Roy. During these excavations, a complete human skeleton was discovered and has since remained in the department's collection. Rajghat is one of the most important archaeological sites representing ancient Varanasi and is crucial for understanding the city's long history. More than seven decades have passed since the skeleton was excavated. At the time, scientific methods for DNA analysis and modern preservation techniques were not available. Although the remains were stored as best as possible, I felt it was time to undertake a scientific study, given how far research has advanced. Today, we can recover DNA even from small bone fragments..."
