The recent Department for Transport post on battery-electric trains, coupled with the recent order for TPE, is a worrying indicator as to where the Rolling Stock and Infrastructure Strategy is headed.
Battery-electric trains aren't a viable solution for freight.

For example: on the West Coast Main Line, a diesel Class 66 slows down to 25mph over Shap summit, and a bi-mode Class 88 down to 48mph.
Two fully electric Class 90 trains can run in tandem at 75mph.
Only full electrification will deliver for both passengers and freight.

Battery electric trains aren’t as efficient, are more expensive and have a greater environmental cost.
Full electrification is the way forward. We've already started - it needs finishing throughout Britain.

It would be unconscionable for the Scottish Government to hand over taxpayer cash to a company deeply involved in the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements.
Rank hypocrisy.
We've called on the Scottish Government to remove CAF, a company complicit in war crimes, from their train bidding process.
We support BDS and mean it, unlike some.

At #TUC26 we raised an Emergency Motion on the sale of DB Cargo UK.
DB Cargo plans to sell the entire business rapidly, risking asset stripping. This threatens jobs and the government's new 2040 rail freight growth target.
This is worrying, but there is a solution.

The government needs to look at insourcing Network Rail's train operations, or expand the publicly owned operator to support the industry. Great British Railways offers an opportunity to absorb rail freight services.
