These West Nile virus (WNV) detections serve as a good reminder to the community that WNV is endemic to the Antelope Valley area. The virus is present in the environment and regularly reappears in the mosquito population. Stay vigilant and apply an EPA approved mosquito repellent
In 2018 we detected invasive Aedes mosquitoes in the AV for the first time. This mosquito bites more aggressively than our native Culex and has very potent compounds in their saliva which cause more severe bite reactions in people than Culex. Visit our Instagram for full info

All this rain + Spring temperatures means that mosquitoes will be living their best life very soon. The mosquito lifecycle from egg to adult takes about 3-5 days, so water that sits for more than 3 days is likely to become a source of mosquitoes. Get rid of it! #AntelopeValley

If your holiday travels are taking you to warmer destinations, travel safely by packing and using insect repellent! Remember, a reliable repellent must contain one of these active ingredients: DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus or IR3535 at at least a 20% concentration.
Keeping mosquitoes at bay is a year-round effort in So Cal. We do get cold weather, which helps keep mosquitoes at bay, but it is still temperate enough for mosquitoes to become an issue if there is standing water for them to live in. Get rid of it at least weekly! #FightTheBite
