English translation of the statement: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Government of Colombia, announces that, as of September 19, 2026, it formally severed diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. This sovereign decision responds to the pillars guiding the Government’s foreign policy regarding national and hemispheric security, and the fight against transnational crime, taking into account alleged links between the Iranian government and international terrorist groups and other narcoterrorist groups that threaten the country’s security. Colombia also took into account documented human rights violations committed by the Iranian government on its territory, verified attacks against countries that are not part of the conflict in the Middle East, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and the obstruction of the authorities’ efforts to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to verify the scope of its nuclear program. The aforementioned actions have deteriorated Colombia’s trust in the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The measure directed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran clarifies that the above does not mean the severance of consular relations, in accordance with Article 45 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and paragraph 3 of Article 2 of the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
