excellent letter: they trust our country with their futures...and invest tens of thousands in their education. It is only reasonable that they would want some return on their investment. The only return they seek is the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience.

What makes this even more bizarre is the rush to have something to announce in response to outdated figures.
Thursday's stats cover YE Dec 23, whereas govt reforms only came into effect in Jan (student dependant ban), March (care dependant ban) & April (salary thresholds).

It's almost as if universities have done what they were told to do by the Secretary of State for Education
ALT In March this year my predecessor Damian Hinds set out the government’s ambitions in a new international education strategy and I’d like to acknowledge everything he did to help drive this forward. I can assure you ladies and gentlemen, I am doubling down. I want the best minds from around the world to come here to study, research and work in the UK. We plan to increase the number of international students we host by 30% by 2030. We also want to see the value of education exports rising to £35billion by then. Enabling global Britain to continue its record levels of investment in our vital public services. As part of that commitment I can announce that we will be introducing a new two-year “Graduate Route”, or post-study work arrangement, for graduates to stay in the UK after their degrees. This will mean that students who want to study in the UK will have time to work, time to develop their skills and time to secure a sponsor if they want to make a more longstanding contribution to

But you can't flip / switch into work unless you have completed your degree.
Also worth pointing out that it was the current govt who designed & introduced the UK's points-based immigration system, including the Health and Care Visa (which was deliberately made more flexible).
The entire point of the piece I was quoting is that they are *not* even "doing a three year degree" but flipping into work within a year of arriving. And that significant numbers who get a visa to work in care are not actually doing so. All this undermines the system.
