Well, I wouldn’t go quite that far. Jamaican culture is still very much a pillar of Black British culture. So much of the slang is rooted in Jamaican Patois, Jamaican food is still insanely popular, as is dancehall, and Notting Hill Carnival remains a staple of the calendar.
What has shifted, though, is that Africans in the diaspora place a strong emphasis on educational excellence, good manners and strong family values. Those qualities were often juxtaposed with the stereotypes attached to Jamaican culture. They’re now increasingly celebrated, while some of the attitudes and behaviours once considered “cool” are very much frowned upon.
Now being Jamaican is frowned upon
