Washington State
Every training camp I had at Washington State University, Coach Leach would share the same story. The story of two kids. The rich kid and the poor kid. The rich kid has two choices. He can become spoiled, entitled, lazy, and expect everything to be handed to him because he has been given more. Or he can take every advantage of what he has been given—resources, coaching, opportunities—and use it to become even better. The poor kid has two choices too. He can say, “I never had a chance. Nobody gave me anything. The world is against me.” He can feel sorry for himself and use it as an excuse. Or he can say, “I may not have what they have, but I am going to outwork everybody.” He can become tougher, more driven, and more relentless than everybody else. It was a powerful message in a locker room full of people from different backgrounds, different families, and different life experiences. Some guys came from wealth. Some came from almost nothing. Some had every opportunity. Others had to fight for every inch. But despite all of those differences, everybody still had the same choice. You can take ownership and use what you have as fuel. Or you can become victim-minded. You can look for excuses, blame your circumstances, become entitled, and convince yourself that because of what you have—or because of what you do not have—you cannot become what you want to be. It is not about how you start. It is about what you choose to do with how you start. The rich kid can waste what he has been given or use it to build something greater. The poor kid can use his circumstances as an excuse or as fuel. In the end, greatness does not come from starting with more or less. It comes from which person inside of you that you choose to feed. I was freshman in Pullman, Fall 1999 & @SteveGleason you were instantly my first favorite player as a WSU student. You are more than an inspiration, Sir. You are family! Love you man. Never fucking punt! #TeamGleason #NoWhiteFlags #NeverPunt #GoCougs

Steve Gleason deserves every bit of this! #GoCougs
Will never forget the day. My rookie year, standing on the sideline of the Superdome and Steve Gleason walked out. 5 years after the blocked punt, just recently having announced his ALS diagnosis. He raised his fist in the air, dropped it down and every voice in the entire city of New Orleans hit the Who Dat chant. Loudest I had ever heard a stadium in my young career. Immediate goosebumps. You could tell what it felt like when an entire city united as one beating heart. For something so much bigger than football. Truly incredible. Saints fans are a special crew.

Kym is flying into Memphis today & heading to Ole Miss; we can’t help but think about where this all began. More than eight years ago, what became Ryan’s SEC Roadtrip started here…one campus, one conversation, one step at a time. That journey also became part of the story told so powerfully by ESPN in the film Hilinski’s Hope & we’ll always be grateful to producer Russell Dinallo, Jen Lada & the entire ESPN team for the care, heart & humanity they brought to Tyler’s story & to the Hilinski family. So much has changed in eight years. So much has grown. But the reason we keep showing up has never changed. And today heading back to Ole Miss feels full circle. Still traveling. Still talking. Still fighting for student-athlete mental health. Still carrying Tyler with us every mile of the way. Thank you, Russell. Thank you, Jen. Thank you, ESPN. And thank you to every school, coach, athlete & community that has helped carry this mission forward during Student Athlete Mental Health Week. ❤️❤️❤️#SAMHW2026 #OleMiss #mentalhealthmatters #SEC #mindu

Interesting to hear your thoughts on this @MattLoveless. The Edward R Murrow College of Communication is world class. We should be at the forefront of all things communication but is this going to far? Appreciate you brother! #GoCougs

Before it became a growing national movement, there were the first 16 schools who simply said—“We’re In” What began as College Football Mental Health Week, because that was the sport Tyler played @WSUCougarFB became Student Athlete Mental Health Week, because it’s always been about all of our student athletes. 16 schools joined in 2020 and over 600 “ARE IN” this year. The week grew to include marching bands, high school athletes, club teams, all students, coaches, staff, administrators, mental health professionals & communities. An original idea grew through hope, love & the belief that our mind, bodies & souls are connected; our student athletes will be happier people on & off the field if they are taking care of their mental health. We never want to lose another Tyler nor have any family struggle with the loss of your person. We’ll always be grateful to the schools who believed in the mission from the beginning—& incredibly proud of what this week has become. Founded by Hilinski’s Hope. Powered by student-athletes. Still growing & we’re VERY thankful to partner with @athletesforhope as we work together to share our mission of hope. ❤️❤️❤️ #SAMHW2026 #werein #pleasestay #tomorrowneedsyou #mentalhealthiskey

This week, we celebrate more than wins. Certainly more than a loss, an error & a tough stat line. We celebrate showing up. We celebrate teammates checking on teammates. We celebrate the person behind the jersey. We celebrate the courage to speak up, reach out & remind each other that no one is ever alone. That’s what Student-Athlete Mental Health Week is all about. 💚 Keep celebrating the CONV3RSATIONS that can change & save lives. Love this pic of Tyler & Cole Madison at a WSU practice, celebrating the game they love. During SAMHW please celebrate the people beside you. We are in this together. ❤️❤️❤️ #samhw2026 #celebrate #mentalhealth #pleasestay #hope

Super Bowl champion & former teammate of Tyler’s at WSU, Abe Lucas recorded a special message for Washington high school football players @wsfca1 whose teams are participating in @hilinskishope & @athletesforhope Student-Athlete Mental Health Week. 🏈💚 His message was simple & powerful: Mental health matters, asking for help is a sign of strength & no athlete should ever feel alone. From Washington State to the NFL, Abe continues to use his platform to support the next generation. Thank you, Abe, for helping CHAMPION this CONV3RSATION 🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️ #mentalhealthmatters #hope #askingforhelpisstrength #12thman #YouAreNotAlone

I’m rooting for you @2mattmiller but brother these are different times! The consequences for lack of production on offense are real. WAZZU is QBU! Fans will leave w/o TDs. Eshelman was the better QB in the scrimmage I saw. He’s bigger & more composed. Things must change! #GoCougs
