Charity Ngilu shattered the glass ceiling in 1997 when she became Kenya’s first female presidential candidate, running a memorable campaign under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with the slogan “Masaa Ni Ya Ngilu!” Ngilus campaign machinery had brains like Prof Anyang Nyongo, Dr Apollo Njonjo, Dr Richard Leakey, Justus Nyang’aya and Tony Gachoka, among others. In that election, SDP had 90 men and 13 women parliamentary candidates. 15 of them got elected into Parliament including 2 women - Ngilu and Beth Mugo. In my opinion, this party, its agenda and its candidates stand out as one of the most progressive moments in our democracy.

In my former compound, there was a guy who practically lived at his girlfriend’s place. The married women in the compound had so many negative things to say about him. It genuinely annoyed them that he was always sleeping over at her place. One time, he came to check on her, and they told him she wasn’t around. To be frank its not a flex.
