The jewish holiday Yom Kippur starts with a troubling prayer called Kol Nidre. It's a preemptive legal declaration that automatically cancels all personal oaths, promises, and vows. In simple terms, it allows jews to treat their words like garbage and cheat their spiritual obligations for the next 12 months. Because of this exact loophole, Western and Islamic courts for centuries viewed the Kol Nidre with immense suspicion. They argued that if a community's most sacred holiday began with a formal legal decree wiping away their oaths for the next year, then a secular court could never trust a jew's testimony under oath in a legal trial or business contract. European states even implemented the 'jewish Oath' (More Judaico). This was a separate court ritual that forced jewish merchants and witnesses to stand in front of a court and swear terrifying curses upon themselves before their testimony was legally accepted. Yom Kippur also includes blood and animal ritual sacrifice. The jewish story states that the priest would sacrifice a young bull and sprinkle its blood on the 'Mercy Seat' inside the 'Holy of Holies' in the 'temple'. This was supposed to atone for the 'priestly bloodline'. Then 2 identical goats were sacrificed for the jewish people. One slaughtered inside the temple and its blood also splattered inside. The second goat, called the scapegoat, would be dropped off a jaggered cliff– alive. The Mishnah (Tractate Yoma 6:6) records that the drop was so severe the animal was shattered into pieces before it even reached halfway down the mountain. There's more. After the blood rituals, two rams would be burnt on the outdoor altar. This is called a Korban Olah: a Burnt Offering. Today, jews fast, pray, and some swing a chicken around their heads (Kapparot) instead. But most are not content. They want to build their animal and blood sacrifice ritual temple. And they want to build it on the 3rd holiest site in Islam: the blessed Al-Aqsa mosque.
