Over years that stops being a pet relationship and becomes the same quiet dependence you have on the other people who live under your roof. When they are gone, the house does not simply feel emptier. It keeps offering the routines they used to answer, and nothing answers back. That is why the loss lands harder than most outsiders expect. You are not mourning an animal you fed. You are mourning a family member who never learned how to be anywhere else but next to you, and who spent the last of their strength still trying to do exactly that.

Brutal. And there will be ZERO consequences. But you will be late to work dealing with broken glass and your car insurance will go up, what a great deal right?
