3.3m views! The huge reaction to this video (and when the story first broke months ago that the National Gallery was getting rid of these) I think shows how deeply we mourn the erosion of beauty and character and colour. Also, the disappointment we feel in prized national institutions when it feels they are losing their way. But above all it surely points to the deep anger at how so much of this is caused by the most petty, unthinking, unnecessary health and safety fanaticism, driven by faceless bureaucrats who we will never be able to challenge directly and are answerable to nobody
The National Gallery sold these benches citing health and safety regulations. Now there鈥檚 a small museum in the US that is proudly using them.

I watched the auction online. Close to tears. The benches reached a range of startling sums. They could so easily have been reupholstered. Our workshops could have done a few, and found other excellent upholsterers to assist, and sourced quality wholesale UK leather.

health and safety is almost never the real reason. it's that nobody in the building is allowed to have taste, so the blandest option wins by default because it's the only one no one can be blamed for.
