"Thales believed that everything was made of water."
This is what you're taught as a kid if you had a half-decent education.
Now, imagine there were a revisionist narrative demonstrating that Thales didn't truly believe that. Details unimportant. Just pretend scholars all came around to this revisionist view.
That historical argument would not be terribly important. But the pedagogical argument about how young people should learn Thales is very important and difficult.
Does the good teacher present a "kids' version" of Thales' thought? Or give the full understanding right away? Is it possible to understand the revisionism without first learning the cartoon version? Should he just skip the debate entirely and teach the (updated) facts? What if a future revisionist comes along? To what extent should kids learn the full history of the question along with the topic itself?
This concern applies broadly to many topics we teach kids: medieval feudalism, the atom, the slave trade, Greek sculpture, etc.

There's an interesting sort of "debate" that happens across multiple centuries and schools of thought in the early church as to whether pagans are worshipping demons, or just nothing (blocks of wood and stone).
One conclusion makes Christianity a kind of "remedial care" for ignorance.
The other makes it a necessary defender against dark arts.
Both are true in their own way. Different emphases to appeal to different kinds of people.
