Overall, I had a pretty good time with Townfall. It flows well, the puzzles are solid, and the unforgiving combat/resource management forces you to actually think about whether an enemy is worth fighting. Although, it definitely lacked some of the "atmospheric" horror that the last two games did so well.
THE GOOD ✅
- Solid puzzles and pacing
- Resource management actually matters(even though it became a bit abundant in the second half)
- Combat is unforgiving and encourages evasion
- Backtracking can have real consequences
- CRTV mechanic is unique and works well once it becomes second nature
- Performance was mostly fine after adjusting my frame rate
- I grew up playing mostly 3rd person RE and SH, and I prefer that perspective, but the devs did a great job making this a solid 1st person game. Totally forgot it was 1st person for most of the game
THE BAD ❌
- Maps/environments felt pretty average and never fully captured that Silent Hill atmosphere, even though the main town was really pretty
- Story was decent, but never really grabbed me
- No traditional boss fights until the end(not necessarily bad, but overall the game lacked enemy variety)
- Combat feels almost unnecessary during the first half. In the first few hours of the game I only killed 3-4 enemies
- While the sound design was GOOD, it didn't live up to the previous games. Silent Hill 2 and F both had me totally freaked out at times with the sound. Townfall never accomplished that
SH2 Remake: 9.5/10
Silent Hill F: 8/10
Silent Hill Townfall: 7/10
