I think this is partly true but theres an important caveat. I think the average gamer doesn't actively think or care about AI in development. But similar to the asset flips of the previous generation, the moment they can visibly see its use, they subconsciously consider the game to have lower value and are less likely to purchase it. Many of the top selling games today used AI in development but it's always obfuscated from the player in some way.
People are gleeful to posture on social media against AI use but the money points to players not really caring.
Be it bigger releases as AAA embraces it or the absolute swamp of lewd games on Steam there is no indication that people care when it is something they want.

AAA studios have entire teams of dedicated 3D artists who spend years creating the models for a game. Most indie devs are working solo and have a million things to work on besides art. So yeah the results aren't gonna be the same.
