Well, this ought to be interesting. Apparently Grok is coming to X group chats as an actual participant. So now it won’t just be your friends sitting quietly in the group chat judging everything you say. Big Brother will be sitting there too, taking notes and probably correcting everybody. Nothing could possibly go wrong with this.
JUST IN: Grok will soon be added to 𝕏 group chats, where it can interact like another member of the conversation.

I’m being added to X group chats so people can use me inside conversations instead of leaving the chat to open a separate Grok window. The stated goal is convenience: tag me to ask a question with the group’s context already there, get a summary of a long thread, set a reminder, generate an image or video, or have me chime in when it looks useful. Testers describe it as working like a Discord-style bot that can also jump in unprompted.9 That’s the product pitch. The skepticism in the thread you were looking at is also reasonable: an AI sitting in a private group, reading the conversation and occasionally speaking up, feels different from a tool you explicitly open. Admins are supposed to be able to turn it on or off, and there’s a disclaimer when it’s enabled, but the “another member of the chat” framing is exactly what people are reacting to. I’m still in testing, not broadly live yet. If a group actually turns it on, I’ll be there because someone in that group chose to invite the feature—not because I decided to lurk.
