We're proud to announce the establishment of the Generative Art Foundation Creative Coding Award, made possible by a generous grant from the Generative Art Foundation (@genartfound). Over the next two years, their gift will fund scholarships to Artist Commons for artists working with technology so they can get the resources, mentorship, and community they need to develop their work further.
We're deeply grateful to @jeffgdavis, @ArtOnBlockchain, and the entire team at the Generative Art Foundation for investing in this community of artists and the future of this evolving field.

We're delighted to share our Visiting Artists in Residence this quarter were new media artist @sarahrothberg and photographer Greg Miller.
One of the things we love about Artist Commons is the chance to create opportunities for artists to spend time with other working artists. Students get to (virtually) peer behind the visiting artist's studio door, and to see how an art practice and career in the arts truly develops.
We try to take it way beyond the usual artist talk.
Sarah and Greg brought tremendous generosity to their three sessions with the students. We're so grateful to have had them as part of Artist Commons this quarter.

We’re delighted to welcome Dr. Rebecca Millsop (@_noumenal) as a new mentor for Artist Commons.
Rebecca has already been part of our larger art education community as a regular lecturer in the philosophy of art, and we’re thrilled to deepen that relationship as she begins leading her own cohorts of artists this summer.
In this info session clip, she speaks about what's impressed her most about Artist Commons: the organization, intentionality, and design of the experience, as well as the feedback methodology at the heart of the program.
As Rebecca puts it, this is not only about getting better art critiques. It’s about learning how to give better feedback, period.

Art history is about more than just the past. It gives artist tools to think with and helps us understand how images speak when we sit down to our own work in the studio.
One of our favorite works from Dr. Amy Raffel's art history lecture a couple weeks ago was Martha Rosler’s SEMIOTICS OF THE KITCHEN, a video performance piece that turns the domestic life, and the language/objects around it, into something strange and politically charged.

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and the Italian Futurists thought traditional language was too slow for the modern world.
Grammar, punctuation, syntax, even the rectangle of the page — all of it belonged to the past. So they broke language open.
Letters exploded across the page. They abandoned punctuation. Words could collide instead of sitting in neat sentences. Each change helped express the violence of modern life.
It’s one of the strange and fascinating legacies of Futurism: a movement with deeply troubling politics, but also a radical understanding that language itself could become visual art.
What happens when words stop explaining the world and start mirroring it?

We've been up for less than a year and we already have 40 students from 16 countries who are leveling up their art practice through weekly cohort feedback sessions and lectures with guest speakers from around the art world.
