the park is named in honor of dr margaret hie ding lin, a fujian-born surgical pioneer who attended u of i and became the first woman to pass the illinois state medical board exam in 1915.
throughout her career it is reported she delivered over 6,500 babies, treated patients in active battle zones in 1930s china, became the first female fellow of the international college of surgeons, and spent decades in chicago caring for chinatown residents on weekends while working at cook county tuberculosis hospital as well as oak forest hospital.
a true chicagoan, dr lin is buried in rosehill cemetery.
