Oregon lawmakers are pushing for a statewide ban on Flock Safety cameras and similar automated license-plate readers, citing serious privacy and surveillance concerns.
Democratic Rep. Willy Chotzen and Republican Rep. Alek Skarlatos plan to introduce the bipartisan ban during Oregon’s 2027 legislative session.
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden supports the effort, calling Flock cameras a “weapon of mass inspection” and warning about the potential weaponization of mass surveillance. Hoodline
Several Oregon communities - including Eugene, Springfield, Bend, Talent, Winston and Woodburn -have canceled or suspended Flock programs amid privacy and data-sharing concerns.
Critics also point to cases where Flock data contributed to wrongful accusations, raising concerns about relying on a massive database tracking innocent drivers.
The Oregon proposal is part of a broader national backlash against automated license-plate surveillance, as lawmakers and communities increasingly question how the data is collected, stored, and shared.
